Straight Shooter: How Justin Hartley Hit the Bullseye as Smallville’s Green Arrow

When Smallville introduced Justin Hartley as Oliver Queen—aka Green Arrow—in its sixth season, few could have predicted just how integral the emerald archer would become to the series’ evolving mythos. Originally intended for a brief multi-episode arc, Hartley’s charismatic portrayal and undeniable chemistry with the cast struck a chord with fans and producers alike, ultimately transforming him into a full-fledged series regular.

From Aquaman Auditions to Emerald Archer

Ironically, Hartley wasn’t new to the DC Universe. Just before landing the role of Green Arrow, he had been cast as Arthur Curry in a 2006 Aquaman pilot (also developed by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar). Though that series never went to air, Hartley made a lasting impression. When Smallville was looking to expand its heroic roster beyond Clark Kent, the creators didn’t hesitate to call him back.

“[Gough and Millar] remembered me from Aquaman, and when they pitched the idea of Green Arrow, I thought it sounded awesome,” Hartley recalled in a behind-the-scenes interview. “He wasn’t a boy scout—he was flawed, layered, and had an edge. I was in.”

Becoming a Regular in the Arrowverse—Before It Was Cool

Hartley first appeared as Oliver Queen in the episode “Sneeze” (Season 6, Episode 2), immediately standing out as a billionaire vigilante with gadgets, grit, and a hidden heart of gold. His Oliver wasn’t just a flashy playboy; he was haunted by a personal mission to expose corruption and challenge those in power—Clark Kent included.

Producers quickly realized that Hartley’s take on Green Arrow could provide more than just guest-spot thrills. He offered a necessary foil to Clark’s idealism. By Season 8, Hartley was officially added to the main cast, giving fans more frequent insight into Oliver’s inner battles and backstory.

“I loved that he wasn’t perfect,” Hartley shared during a fan convention. “He had a past, he made mistakes, but he was always trying to do better. That’s what made him human—and relatable.”

Favorite Moments, in His Own Words

Over the course of five seasons, Hartley’s Green Arrow became a fan-favorite, known for his high-tech archery, brooding charm, and emotional depth. But when asked about his favorite parts of playing Oliver, Hartley’s answer was surprisingly grounded.

“I really enjoyed the physicality of the role,” he explained. “The training, the stunts, the archery—I did a lot of it myself. There was something really rewarding about being able to step into those boots and feel like a superhero.”

Still, it wasn’t all about the action. Hartley noted that some of his most meaningful moments came in quieter scenes.

“I loved the relationship between Oliver and Chloe. It brought out this vulnerable side of him that you didn’t always get to see. And his tension with Clark was always a blast to play—like two brothers who respect each other but don’t always see eye to eye.”

A Hero’s Legacy

Justin Hartley’s Green Arrow left an indelible mark on Smallville—so much so that many fans still consider him the definitive live-action version of the character. Though he didn’t carry the bow into later series like Arrow, Hartley helped lay the groundwork for the small-screen superhero boom that would follow.

“I’ll always be grateful for that role,” Hartley concluded. “It was a turning point in my career and gave me the chance to play a hero who was as complicated as he was courageous.”

Bullseye.
